Escape the Commodity Trap and Make Your Lab Indispensable

Tuesday, August 6, 11 – 11:20 a.m.
Exhibit Hall, Theater 3
Supported by ARUP Laboratories

More and more hospital laboratories are facing the threat of being outsourced to commercial labs by health system administration. To prevent this, lab leaders need to understand the business theory behind outsourcing. Using case studies from other industries to illustrate the costs and benefits of outsourcing versus vertical integration, this presentation will describe how hospital laboratories can better position themselves as critically integrated resources rather than interchangeable commodities.

After attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Provide examples of the tradeoffs between outsourcing and vertical integration.
  • Identify key ways in which local laboratories can personalize services in ways national labs can’t match.
  • Communicate impact of the lab, going beyond traditional cost-based measures.
