Successful Antimicrobial Stewardship

A Multidisciplinary Approach to Provide Measurably Better Healthcare

Tuesday, August 6, 7 – 8:30 a.m.
Hilton Anaheim, California CD Room
Supported by Abbott Laboratories

Overview

Antimicrobial stewardship programs provide multiple benefits to patients, clinicians, the health system, and the community. They can make a significant difference in patient care by providing safe, appropriate, and effective antibiotic therapy. The health system can then benefit from reduced antibiotic resistance, decreased C. difficile infections, and increased cost savings. Incorporation of procalcitonin (PCT), a protein produced in response to a bacterial infection, to guide antibiotic therapy can positively impact patient outcomes. This workshop will review the healthcare implications of antimicrobial stewardship, value of PCT-guided antibiotic stewardship protocols and the measurable benefits to patients, clinicians, health systems.

Outcomes

Attendees will learn to:

  • Understand the healthcare implications of antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Appreciate the importance of integrated clinical care teams and their role in implementing an antibiotic stewardship protocol.
  • Highlight the value of PCT-guided antibiotic stewardship protocols and the measurable benefits to patients, clinicians, and health systems.
